Join us in the rarefied air of magical New Mexico, culturally refined Japan, or vibrant and ever-changing Cuba for the Writers Lab. Be fully present for a unique educational experience—led by some of the world’s most accomplished writers—that is bound to change your life as a writer and as a person.
In Writers Lab workshops we hold values of craft, community, and the creative process in the highest regard. With our collaborative and affirming environments, a passion for writing and storytelling—and a hunger for shared experiences—are the most important ingredients.
Pam Houston, Andrew McCarthy, Deborah Madison, Kirk Ellis, Lee Gutkind and Hampton Sides, renowned in the literary world, provide daily lessons on the art and craft of writing in a variety of genres and travel destinations. In quiet settings, they encourage constructive conversation and motivate you to muse and write.
Our private campus in Santa Fe has long been a sanctuary for learning and study. We share this enchanted place with a neighboring Carmelite Monastery. Dramatic views of the surrounding Jemez and Sangre de Cristo mountain ranges, warm sunshine, cool mountain air, beautiful courtyards, access to hiking trails, convenient on-campus lodging—and a private caterer to provide fresh, healthy meals—are the elements that converge to make this the perfect place for you to find inspiration and hone your craft. For details about staying on-campus visit our Santa Fe Accommodations page.
The bustling, futuristic city of Tokyo and the ancient spiritual city
of Kyoto are where we make our homes in Japan. With respectful and
hospitable Japanese people as our guides, a country steeped in mythical
traditions and modern wonders unfolds before us at every turn.
In Cuba, our home is a beautifully restored convent in the heart of Old
Havana, just one block from Plaza Vieja. Convento Santa Brigida features
simple but comfortable accommodations, light-filled meeting spaces, a
breakfast room, a library, a chapel, and Italian nuns as our lovely
hosts. This convent is a serene base to reflect and write.
President Trump’s recent sanctions on travel to Cuba prohibit individual travel; however, it is legal to visit Cuba with a group led by a licensed educational organization. Santa Fe Workshops and its Writers Lab programs are authorized by the U.S. Department of the Treasury to conduct people-to-people cultural exchanges in Cuba. Over the past seven years, our programs have provided unique access to the backstage of this beguiling island nation that focus on interactions with its engaging and generous people. It is through these personal exchanges that true understanding between peoples is born, not through isolation and restrictions. Join us this year for a memorable journey to Cuba and extend the hand of friendship to the remarkable Cuban people.
Whether you are joining us in dynamic Havana, mysterious Japan, or enchanting Santa Fe, the Writers Lab provides you with a hub of creativity and community, extraordinary instructors, supportive staff, and the opportunity to take off, and take your writing to the next level.
Travel transforms us. When we journey out we uncover mysteries within. A change of setting in a new destination has the power to take your writing in new directions.
