»Spotlight on Our Cuba Team: Syl Arena

Cuba Program
© Syl Arena, © Zack Arias

Syl Arena will be leading his second Santa Fe Workshops Cuba Program trip April 15-23. We talked with Syl about his impressions of his first visit to the Pearl of the Antilles. You can read the full interview in our A Priority blog post.

Q. What's the most challenging aspect of photographing in Cuba?

A. Going from intense sunlight to deep shadows, continually jumping back and forth, and having to photograph quickly and discreetly with minimal gear in a wide range of circumstances. Photographically it’s an amazing situation to be in. You definitely practice your people skills. Many Cubans speak English, and one of the things that surprised me is not one of them expressed any anti- American sentiment. They are warm-hearted people. Many have relatives or friends in the United States, and they want to meet and talk with Americans. Cubans are people of pride, in themselves and in their country. Whether you agree or not, they are entitled to their political pride.

Syl leads one of our final two spring Cuba Programs, and Zack Arias leads the other:

April 15 - April 23
Picturing Cuba: Havana and Viñales
with Syl Arena
Join photographer Syl Arena on his second trip to Cuba, and experience Havana and Viñales through your own eyes.

April 15 - April 23
Portrait of Cuba
with Zack Arias
Shared experiences allow you to create insightful portraits and true connections with Cuba’s greatest treasure: its people.

Join us to experience the Cuba that exists behind the tourist veil, and experience this beguiling country before it changes forever.
