Fine Tuning Black-and-White Techniques
with Alan Ross

Alan Ross' one-day "crash" courses and two- to five-day custom workshops in black-and-white photography are designed for individuals or two persons enrolling together and are tailored to your particular needs and interests. As the only student, or working with a partner of your choosing, you have the opportunity to cover exactly the materials and techniques that interest you while working at the pace and level appropriate to your abilities and requirements. Courses range from an intense day covering film testing and the Zone System, or the techniques, tricks, and nuances of making a great print, to an extended five-day session during which you pull all the pieces together. Darkroom sessions include basic techniques as well as an introduction to selective masking.

Working in Alan's Santa Fe home and darkroom/studio, you have the chance to hone your skills in a master's lab. If fieldwork beckons you, the great landscape and historic communities of northern New Mexico are at your doorstep.

Alan Ross, a well-known photographer, master printer, and educator, was Ansel Adams's photographic assistant in Carmel from 1974 to 1979 and has been the exclusive printer of Adams's Yosemite Special Edition negatives for more than 28 years. He operated a commercial photography studio in San Francisco for 12 years. Alan relocated to Santa Fe in 1993 to devote more of his energies to his personal work and teaching. His work is featured in collections and galleries throughout the country and internationally, and he has led workshop groups in locations from Yosemite to China. This is Alan's 13th year teaching for The Workshops.

Who Should Attend: These personalized workshops are intended for photographers with a solid foundation in basic technique. They may be most profitable for those working in medium to large formats, but are open to all those with the desire to push their craft forward. A phone interview with Alan is required for admission.

Tuition: $475 per day, $2135 for five days. Two people $725 per day, $3200 for five days plus application fee and applicable tax. The fee includes darkroom use and chemicals; bring your favorite printing papers with you. Application fee and applicable tax extra.
