PerĂº in Book Form: Cusco during Semana Santa
Daniel Milnor and Adam L. Weintraub
March 27 - April 5, 2010

Nestled in the Andes of Perú at a little over 11,000 feet, Cusco retains powerful bonds with its indigenous past as the ancient capital of the Inca Empire. Today its festivals, markets, and everyday street life overflow with unrivaled ethnic and cultural pride. Thanks to our workshop leaders’ personal connections and local knowledge, we enjoy extraordinary opportunities to observe and photograph the processions, the parades, the symbolism and the spectacle of Holy Week in a deeply spiritual community.

Documentary photography enables practitioners to completely immerse themselves in their projects, eventually forming an in-depth body of work or storyline and, in many ways, it is perfectly suited for book form. Adam and Daniel guide participants through the entire process of making a book, from visualization to editing, sequencing, and output.

Our base will be Adam’s bed-and-breakfast, located just outside Cusco’s main tourist district. Each day, our group meets for several hours to review ideas, share work, and discuss options. We then go our separate ways in search of great images in a city alive with passion and symbolism. Our schedule also includes individual meetings with Adam and Daniel to discuss direction and edits, style and substance, and vision.

Instructor(s)

Daniel Milnor is a documentary fine-art photographer who has worked as a photographer specialist for the Eastman Kodak Company. He has photographed earthquakes, political conventions, civil unrest, Super Bowls, Khmer Rouge defectors, the NBA Finals, and former presidents Bush and Clinton. His images have appeared in LIFE, People, Black & White, Camera Arts, and Discovery, among others. Daniel is a consultant for Blurb, Inc., a digital, print-on-demand book publisher based in San Francisco. He has taught at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena and for the Workshops. His Web sites are www.milnorpictures.net and www.milnorpictures.com.

Adam L. Weintraub is a photographer based in Seattle. His Photoexperience.net workshops combine inspiring artists which offer insight and collaboration in an intimate setting. Removed from Cusco's tourist section, his B&B plays host to the class, overlooking the Cusco valley. His first personal collection of photographs will be published in May 2010 titled, Vista Andina. He is currently coordinating efforts to create a permanent archive and catalogue of the famed Peruvian photographer, Martin Chambi. Adam is a past President of Blue Earth Alliance and is widely published, collected, hired and admired for his personal work.
