As early as 1856, the pioneering French photographer Gustave LeGray was collaging photos together to make panoramic vistas and improve the look of the skies in his landscapes. He recognized early on that montage is a wonderful way for photographic artists to realize their personal vision in the same way painters do. In this workshop, Jean combines field trips in the high desert terrain of northern New Mexico with Adobe Photoshop “darkroom” time in the Workshops state-of-the-art digital lab. The goal is for participants to learn how to think like artists, as we visualize, capture, and craft exceptional landscape photographs.
Under Jean’s guidance, we practice shooting raw files and learn to use Photoshop’s Photomerge and Layers and Masks features to create genuinely strong pictures (in color or black-and-white), the way you see them in your mind’s eye. In addition to the technical work, in-class critiques and discussions encourage participants to reach the next level in their photography, as we study the differences between good pictures and great pictures. Join Jean for this inspiring workshop and explore what LeGray called “combination printing,” using techniques and technologies he could only have dreamed about.
