Santa Fe Sojournal: From Image to Book
Elsa Kendall
October 26 - October 30, 2009

The soujournal is a small accordion-fold book that combines photographs, typography, and storytelling. Participants in this workshop take advantage of the beauty of northern New Mexico to create a small body of work by shooting a story of their choice in one day. Using these images, and with Elsa’s guidance, we hone the skills of refined picture editing, sequencing, storytelling, and simple layout and construction to make our own soujournals.

On Monday morning we embark upon individual shooting adventures with our digital cameras. Tuesday finds us back in the digital lab, where we begin working on organizing and editing our images and printing contacts with which to begin sequencing. The narrative continues to take shape as we create a simple template in Adobe Photoshop, work on layout and design, and finish with printing and construction by week’s end. Our days include hands-on demonstrations, step-by-step instructions, a guest speaker, a field trip to inspire our creativity, and plenty of one-on-one attention.
