Spend two fast-paced days in Santa Fe with one goal in mind: your own photo book. We delve into the exciting and rapidly expanding world of e-bookmaking using Blurb’s Booksmart software. Each participant brings 30 to 40 images from one body of work (a personal project or a commercial venture) and learns how to edit, sequence, and lay them out to create a beautiful and stylish photo book that can be ordered online, on demand.
We explore all the capabilities of Booksmart in depth, and learn the importance of color management within the bookmaking workflow. With Susan’s guidance and assistance, each participant’s book is laid out, with text added if desired. We also investigate Blurb’s Imagewrap feature, the option of dust jackets, and how to enahnce static templates with Adobe Photoshop. We examine books previously published with Blurb for inspiration and design ideas. For additional insight into the state-of-the-art of photography books, we visit Santa Fe’s photo-eye bookstore. Participants leave this workshop with their new books ready to be uploaded and published.
Instructor(s)
Susan Hayre Thelwell, a Santa Fe based fine-art photographer and educator, celebrates her vision in black and white with her long-term personal project “Mitchell’s Lot.” In 2008, her book of the project won an honorable mention in the Blurb “Photography.Book.Now” competition, and her work was exhibited at the Portland Museum of Art 2009 Biennial. Trained at Rockport College in the traditional darkroom, she made the transition to digital as an assistant at the Workshops. Susan’s enthusiasm for teaching and learning, and her understanding of the technical as well as artistic sides of photography, make her a dynamic instructor.
