To create an extraordinary image, a photographer must take responsibility for every element in the frame, just as a painter is responsible for every brush stroke on the canvas, a writer for every word on the page, and a musician for every note played. This workshop looks at the various means we have at our disposal to design full-frame images as we photograph, thereby keeping darkroom and digital manipulations to a minimum.
We begin the week designing two-dimensional spaces and build up to complex three-dimensional scenes, incorporating multiple elements and details that support our main subject. In addition to concentrating on the center and edges of the frame, we learn to pay close attention to every detail of the background. The spectrum of genres we cover includes environmental portraits, street photography, landscapes, cityscapes, still lifes, and action scenes. Participants work with normal to moderately wide-angle lenses that approximate our own field of vision. In addition to group and individual critiques, we analyze and discuss images by a variety of photographers known for their sense of design.
