Visual Storytelling with Audio
Bob Sacha
July 5 - July 11, 2009

This workshop is filling quickly. Please call soon to register (505) 983-1400, ext. 11.

Storytelling is changing, thanks to the digital revolution. Great photographs alone are no longer enough; the new media-rich world of the Internet demands stories that take advantage of the power of the web. One of the simplest, quickest, and most powerful ways to make stories more compelling is to add audio. Ambient sounds and interviews are the perfect complement to documentary storytelling and photographic essays. Combined artfully, pictures and sound together are many times more powerful than either is alone. This workshop is for photographers who want to combine still images and sound for the web, DVD, or TV.

We explore a new kind of storytelling by learning how to add music, voices, interviews, narration, and ambient sounds to our images. We start by studying and discussing examples of successful stories that use great images and strong audio. We investigate audio equipment, recording techniques, and editing and publishing programs. We practice interviewing, recording ambient sounds, and doing narration. Field trips provide opportunities to put this all into practice. Back in class, we edit our images and sounds together to create powerful multi-media stories, from simple slide shows with music to stories with audio tracks and interviews. Finally, we learn to quickly and easily upload polished projects online.

Instructor(s)

Bob Sacha has been in love with sound since he was a child. For the past 25 years, he has made his reputation as an award-winning photojournalist. Thanks to new media, he has combined these two loves into a new form of storytelling and has been winning awards since his first web documentary was published. As a globetrotting photographer, Bob has produced photo essays, portraits and covers for National Geographic, Life, TIME, and Fortune, to name just a few. He photographed the first all-digital, around-the-world assignment for National Geographic, the January 2005 cover story “Caffeine.” His photographs have been widely exhibited and honored with numerous awards.

In 2008, Bob joined the Emmy award-winning multimedia studio MediaStorm where his first piece, “Bearing Witness: Five Years of the Iraq War” won first place in the Online News Association Competition and the New York Photo Festival. Bob has been an audio producer at the annual Mountain Workshops in Madisonville, Kentucky, and was the 2006-07 John H. and James L. Knight Foundation Fellow at Ohio University. This is Bob’s fifth year teaching for the Workshops. His web site is www.bobsacha.com.
