Mexico is a photographer’s paradise during Easter week. This seven-day digital workshop with Raul Touzon—now in its fifth year—takes full advantage of the many extraordinary sights and delights of Holy Week in colonial Mexico.

On Holy Wednesday we photograph the “San Juan de Dios Procession” when children dressed as angels and Roman guards march through the streets of San Miguel. The next day, we drive to Cadereyta to photograph “The Procession of the 400 Christs” with hundreds of pilgrims carrying statues and long poles adorned with papier-mâché. On Good Friday, we travel first to Ixtla to photograph the reenactment of Christ’s passion; locals dressed as Roman guards follow a cross bearing Christ through town and up a mountain where the crucifixion takes place. Next, in Queretaro we witness the most famous procession in Mexico, the “Procession of Silence” in which 2000 hooded Penitentes carry mesquite crosses through the city. Back in San Miguel on Holy Saturday, we photograph women of the town, dressed in black, as they accompany the Virgin Mary through the streets. A procession of ‘little angels” leads the way, lighting the darkness with their candles. We close the week with the “Blowing of the Judases”, where papier-mâché replicas of hated people, including political figures, hang from ropes with fireworks wrapped around their waists. With Raul’s guidance and unparalleled access, we photograph the amazing Holy Week events of these beautiful colonial mountain towns.

Mornings are devoted to reviews and critiques of images made the previous day, as well as lectures on digital camera settings, accurate metering and exposure, composition rules, creative use of light: mixing different light sources, creative flash techniques as well as editing, sequencing and story development.
