Photographing on the move in foreign places requires the combination of technical expertise, culture competence, intuitive awareness, curiosity and a dash of panache. Nevada Wier, a specialist in adventure and travel photography, will discuss how to combine these technical, practical and creative aspects of travel photography in order to get an image that elevates itself above the usual travel clichés.
Ah, Thailand! It is a jewel in Southeast Asia. The exotic surroundings of Bangkok and its environs provide a spectrum of environments and activities for our photographic workshop. While traveling, the advantages of using digital cameras are abundant and exciting. This intensive workshop is a lively blend of lectures, discussions, outdoor assignments, and field trips while tackling the challenges of digital photography -- including group and individual critiques, personal assignments, and one-on-one meetings with Nevada. We discuss ways to approach and photograph people, cross-cultural considerations in foreign countries, tips on equipment and digital concerns in different travel and outdoor environments, using natural light, fill-flash, as well as digital capture and workflow practices. (Note: This is not a workshop on Adobe Photoshop techniques.)
We will be based in the exquisite Shangri-La Hotel on the banks of the Chao Phya River, Bangkok. As well as our daily assignments and critiques in colorful Bangkok we will have a fantastic field trip south of Bangkok to Petchburi, Hua Hin, and Ampawa.
We’ll plunge into rural Thailand -- by a funky local train, cruise by long-tailed boat up a beautiful winding river, and ride to the hilltop palace of the monarch of “The King and I”. Few journeys provide us with such scenic variety. We’ll photograph a market, the train and its passengers, rural scenes along the tracks, windmills in salt flats, the Mahachai market (and watch a magical transformation that’s a challenge to capture), fishing boats, river life, medieval ceramic workshops, We overnight in Ampawa so we can photograph the very fun weekly floating market. We will edit our images and stay at the lovely Bann Amphawa Resort www.baanamphawa.com. From there we will travel towards Hua Hin and spend a night in the elegant Fisherman’s Village hotel on the Gulf of Thailand http://www.fishermansvillage.net/, which has facilities for editing and reviewing our images.
Then we drive to Hua Hin, a charming fishing town further down the Gulf of Thailand, where we will photograph the endlessly fascinating Khao Wang hilltop palace. We will also have time to continue and have a bit of relaxation at the stunning Veranda Resort and spa www.verandaresortandspa.com . We return to Bangkok for our final assignment, classroom time, and farewell dinner.
Please note: this workshop follows the deposit and cancellation policies for Mexico.
