Explore northern New Mexico’s distinctive light, expansive landscape, and unique culture in this dynamic workshop for beginning digital photographers. The American Southwest holds a prominent place in the genre of black-and-white photography. This workshop is an opportunity to study the region’s master black-and-white photographers and to learn how light influences every step in the process, from the initial digital exposure to the final ink-jet print. Balancing time in the field and the digital darkroom, we immerse ourselves in making photographs, whether they are landscapes, portraits, or documentary images.
We begin by learning the correct camera settings for optimal exposures, go on to explore conversion methods from color capture to black and white in Photoshop and Lightroom, and work through the black-and-white printing process. Throughout the week, Susan guides participants along the technical steps necessary to execute their vision.
Instructor(s)
Susan Hayre Thelwell, a Santa Fe based fine-art photographer and educator, celebrates her vision in black and white with her long-term personal project “Mitchell’s Lot.” In 2008, her book of the project won an honorable mention in the Blurb “Photography.Book.Now” competition, and her work was exhibited at the Portland Museum of Art 2009 Biennial. Trained at Rockport College in the traditional darkroom, she made the transition to digital as an assistant at the Workshops. Susan’s enthusiasm for teaching and learning, and her understanding of the technical as well as artistic sides of photography, make her a dynamic instructor. This is her third year teaching for the Workshops. Her web site is www.susanhayrethelwell.com.
