This workshop is for intermediate-to-advanced photographers interested in producing a book of their photography. We begin by exploring the question, “What makes a photo book great?” We examine a variety of classic and contemporary photography books in order to gain a deeper understanding of editing and sequencing a body of work, as well as issues of book design, production, and promotion. The week includes an overview of the publishing industry in addition to demonstrations, guest speakers, and field trips to visit local publishers, photographers, and booksellers. “Print on demand” books are also discussed, with many examples shown throughout.

Participants should bring a body of their own photographic work that they consider complete or close to completion. Seminar-style discussions of each participant’s work cover ideas for editing, sequencing, and possible book formats. Drawing on Darius’s years of experience in the photo book community, this workshop examines numerous contemporary photo book examples and provides the tools for researching the field of photo book publishers.
