Capturing an image is only the beginning of the photographic process. One of the biggest challenges facing digital photographers is producing quality prints from their images. The goal of this workshop is to make the digital printing process as clear as possible and to achieve the prints we envision.
Topics covered include how to acquire images precisely and efficiently, through either scanning film or processing Raw files with Camera Raw, and how to manage color correctly and easily. Using the latest version of Adobe Photoshop, and working with images taken both prior to and during the workshop, we learn how to optimize images for printing and adjust them with the utmost control. We explore conversion from color to black and white, the best way to print while retaining detail in shadows and highlights, and the best way to sharpen. In addition to using adjustment layers to build a file that can be processed for multiple uses, we learn how to choose the best printer-driver options and when to use a RIP. We work with different paper types in order to observe their effects on the look and feel of prints. We also play with image size and examine its effect on tone, sharpness, and the overall character and impact of an image. Finally, we explore creating and using custom profiles tuned to our own printers.
