Thousands of Sandhill Cranes, Artic Snow Geese and a wide variety of other birds descend in the winter months on the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge. Sunrise finds the cranes roosting in the shallow water of flooded fields. As the sun continues its ascent, it is joined by the cranes and tens of thousands of geese and we are witness to one of natures' most spectacular displays. Northern Harrier hawks patrol the fields in search of food while kestrels, eagles and other raptors soar through the sky.

Early the afternoon of January 6, we rendezvous in Socorro, New Mexico and get started. For the next three mornings we arrive at the refuge before dawn to photograph the birds' daily departure. Late mornings we return to the hotel for lunch, classes, and individual and group photo critiques. We then return to the Bosque to photograph the birds in the late afternoon light and to capture their dramatic evening “fly-in” to the roosting grounds.

We travel to Santa Fe Wednesday evening for the remaining two days to edit, process and print our images in the Workshops’ state-of-the-art digital lab.
