The Four Corners area—where the borders of New Mexico, Arizona, Utah and Colorado converge—boasts some of the most exciting landscapes ever to challenge a photographer’s eye. Join seasoned landscape photographer David Halpern in a three-day exploration of one of the West’s most fascinating regions, followed by two days of interpretive work and printing in The Workshops state-of-the-art digital lab. Farmington, New Mexico, the Four Corners’ most centrally located community, serves as our headquarters for the beginning of this adventure. The area surrounding Farmington abounds with extraordinary and sometimes bizarre natural formations, as well as petroglyphs, pictographs, and architectural sites showcasing Navajo and Anasazi architecture. Nearby, standing nearly 1,600 feet above a high desert plain (and visible from great distances) is the imposing Shiprock formation, central to Navajo religion, mythology, and tradition—and subject of many iconic photographs. We travel at a pace that allows your imagination to run free, with all teaching and demonstrations taking place in the field. On our fourth day we return to Santa Fe, where you enjoy your remaining time on The Workshops campus, receiving instructional and technical support, translating your raw images into expressive prints, creating a personal portfolio, and participating in constructive discussions and reviews. Throughout it all, David freely shares his knowledge, enthusiasm, and vision, while encouraging your self-expression. INSTRUCTOR(S)
