For most emerging photographers, creating a distinctive style and getting hired for it is the ultimate goal. But turning your passion for photography into a career with steady clients presents untold challenges. So give yourself the advantage of insider perspectives tips. Over the course of this weeklong hybrid workshop, Photo District News photo editor Amber Terranova and successful freelance photographer Ryan Heffernan share real-life methods for building a strong portfolio and present strategies for getting your work seen in today’s competitive market. With a solid understanding of new and unconventional outlets for photography, Amber and Ryan focus on honing your visual voice in your chosen genre, be it editorial, fashion, commercial, personal work, documentary, or photojournalism. We explore the nuances involved in estimating projects, how to work with a variety of clients, and the ins-and-outs of effectively maximizing social marketing tools to help you define your brand. And, because assignments are the name of the game, of course we tackle an editorial assignment. Using available talent, breathtaking Santa Fe locations as backdrops, and Ryan’s on-the-ground experience, we deliver our assignments on schedule (if sleep deprived!). Join Amber and Ryan for a week of fine-tuning your vision, creating new work, and learning to navigate the business end of photography—and start building your career as an editorial and advertising photographer.
