The National Geographic Assignment
with Jim Richardson
July 1 - July 6, 2012

This workshop has already begun or is a past workshop.

For decades National Geographic has published the world’s greatest picture stories. Covering a vast range of subjects around the globe, the magazine’s photographers and editors craft powerful narratives, always tailoring the photographic methodology to the story that needs to be told. No other magazine goes to such lengths to bring unique stories to life and present them to millions of readers. Not surprisingly, going on assignment for National Geographic is the dream of countless photographers.

Using a no-nonsense, uncomplicated teaching style, 25-year veteran National Geographic photographer Jim Richardson shows you how National Geographic stories happen, from start to finish, and gives you the chance to practice the skills necessary to create your own great visual narratives. His critiques are kind but unflinching; he believes in a “No B.S. Zone” approach to teaching.

Your learning journey begins even before you start photographing vibrant Santa Fe, with story conception and proposal writing, two skills needed to convince editors to send you on assignment. Then, with interactive photo sessions and critiques, Jim shepherds you through the rewarding process of making telling images. Finally, he guides you through editing and distilling your work into a finished, polished presentation. The type of presentation editors want to see!

COLLEGE CREDIT AVAILABLE (Course Level 300): For an additional fee, participants may elect to receive one hour of college credit through Hastings College upon successful completion of this workshop. Those interested in earning credit should inquire with Santa Fe Photographic Workshops at the time of registration, 505-983-1400, Ext. 11.
