“Cathy has a great attitude and is so giving of herself. I was very hesitant of photographing people and she showed me I can do it!” Barbara Crane, former workshop participant Photographing people with skill and confidence, and having fun doing it, is the goal of this workshop with Cathy Maier Callanan. Designed for intermediate-level photographers who want to make stronger, more meaningful portraits, but may be hesitant about approaching people, we learn effective methods for approaching strangers and putting friends and family at ease. Through daily assignments, we develop the awareness and sensitivity necessary to move beyond literal renderings to more intimate portraits. Composition, lighting techniques, and forming a personal style are topics for discussion, investigation, and assignments. Everyone will leave with their own personal project. With a colorful and diverse population, Santa Fe and northern New Mexico provide stunning and creative environments to photograph and offer a wealth of portrait opportunities to test newfound skills and build confidence. Daily field sessions (including downtown Santa Fe and a Western movie ranch) follow morning critiques, lectures, and visits from several successful portrait photographers. This is a spirited, insightful week of coaching, fun, challenges, and pushing beyond where you thought you could go in photographing people. INSTRUCTOR(S)
