Learning how to identify the spiritual and sacred essence of a place, a person, or a culture is at the heart of this workshop. Participants explore the deserts and mountains of northern New Mexico, the traditions of the Native American culture, and the spiritual communities of Santa Fe and Taos. Our focus is on the documentary approach to photographing cultures and their environments. Daily assignments emphasize tuning in to the land and its primeval energy, as well as listening and watching for a spiritual connection to unfold during a portrait session. Chris joins participants on field trips to help them find the link between what they see and what they feel, and then to capture their emotions with their camera. We look at personal documentary projects from the philosophical to the technical, the spiritual to the pragmatic, including magazine assignments, books, and fine-art exhibitions. Chris also discusses funding, publishing, exhibitions, and careers in travel photography, and meets individually with each participant. INSTRUCTOR(S)
