Seeing Cuba
with Kip Brundage
February 1 - February 8, 2012

This workshop has already begun or is a past workshop.

This program is organized and operated by Cuba Cultural Travel, in consultation with, and endorsed by, the Santa Fe Photographic Workshops.

As the eyes of the world turn to the small but resilient island in the Caribbean Sea, “Seeing Cuba” offers the rare opportunity to engage with the Cuban people and discover and explore the country’s cultural diversity and physical beauty. The music, dance, sports, local produce markets, architectural marvels, stunning landscapes, and most of all the spirited and gracious Cuban people, are the focus of this program that will enable you to better understand this intriguing country just 90 miles south of Miami.

This cultural exploration consists of people-to-people educational exchanges offering each participant unparalleled access to the inhabitants and culture of Cuba alongside Cuban photographers. By working closely with the premier photographic organization in Cuba, Fototeca de Cuba, and its Director Nelson Ramírez, this program allows the U.S. participants to learn about Cuba's long and colorful history and engage directly with a variety of Cubans. Two, English-speaking Cubans who live in Havana act as your local guides and translators for this program. Each day two small groups venture out with their cameras into Havana and its surrounding countryside to meet Cubans from all walks of life and to discover and explore this country and its people.

In addition to visiting and interacting with Cubans at the historic sites and cultural centers of Old Havana, the group ventures to the nearby neighborhoods of Casablanca, Regla, and the fishing village of Cojímar. The tree-lined suburban neighborhood of Vedado provides its diversity of architecture and living conditions to better understand the Cuban people and their urban lifestyle through photography. A day trip to the farming community of Viñales allows a close view of the island’s beautiful countryside and offers the unique opportunity to visit tobacco farms and spend time and interact with the families who call this fertile valley home.

Seeing Cuba is a total immersion into the lives of the Cuban people to better understand their joys and challenges and the rich culture they embrace on a daily basis.

Includes roundtrip airfare from Miami to Havana, double accommodations for seven nights in Havana (single supplement add $700), breakfast daily plus two group dinners, airport transfers, and all visas and licenses. A $45 application fee will also be charged. Airfare to Miami and hotel accommodations in Miami are not included. Enrollment: 12 to 15 participants.
