Cuba: Picturing Change
with E. Wright Ledbetter
January 25 - February 1, 2012

This workshop has already begun or is a past workshop.

This program is organized and operated by Cuba Cultural Travel, in consultation with, and endorsed by, the Santa Fe Photographic Workshops.

Longstanding political tensions have all but hidden the enchanting Cuban culture from most Americans since 1959. During this week, participants have the special opportunity to experience firsthand the wonderful mystery that is Cuba. Joining tested Cuba traveler Wright Ledbetter, US voyagers discover and explore Havana’s compelling surroundings and Cuba’s greatest dynamic force: her people.

With the captivating capital city as our springboard, the group sets out through Havana’s streets and neighborhoods to engage the Cuban people and culture through meaningful people-to-people contact. We work to go beyond the stereotypical and seek out the substance beneath Havana’s many fascinating layers by using different perspectives to create powerful images and visual stories from our many diverse and interesting interactions with the Cuban people.

This Cuba Cultural Travel program offers the participants a unique opportunity to connect with everyday Cubans. The resulting exchanges and the individual and shared experiences allow for insightful portraits that strengthen our cultural relations and reveal the Cuban people as one of the world’s magnificent and authentic treasures, enduring with spirit and passion, and seeking greater opportunities to flourish more fully, both domestically and internationally.

At our week’s conclusion, photographers emerge with a portrait of Cuba that will serve as a small part of the larger conversation about the Cuban people at this turning point in their history; and in doing so, capture moments and create narratives that connect each of us to the universal mysteries and challenges—and great opportunities—of being a part of the ever-changing and unfolding human story.
