Discover Cuba: Its People and Culture
with Nelson Ramírez
January 25 - February 1, 2012

This workshop has already begun or is a past workshop.

This program is organized and operated by Cuba Cultural Travel, in consultation with, and endorsed by, the Santa Fe Photographic Workshops.

Join Cuba Cultural Travel for an educational exchange program to interact with the Cuban people and better understand this country and its people. Cuba Cultural Travel has organized a journey through Havana, its surrounding countryside, and the famed Valle de Viñales that allows each participant to interact meaningfully by exchanging ideas and experiences with Cubans from all walks of life. Artists, students, shop keepers, farmers, restaurant owners, dancers, and fishermen are encountered on the streets and in private meetings on a daily basis in this rich people-to-people program.

Cuba is one the most enigmatic countries in the world—a potent mix of socialism and newly approved private enterprise; laid back Caribbean island culture and vibrant big-city life; and chrome-laden vintage American cars from the 1940s and 50s juxtaposed with new Chinese taxis and tour buses. Cuba is a tropical paradise with a storied history where intrigue, romance, and uncertainty are woven into the fabric of everyday life.

Long-time Havana resident, Nelson Ramírez, and two other English-speaking Cubans who live in Havana act as your local guides and translators for this program. Each day two small groups venture out with their cameras to discover an authentic Cuba that lies beneath the tourist Cuba. The focus of this week is to gain a better understanding of contemporary Cuban life by meeting the island’s inhabitants.

Includes roundtrip airfare from Miami to Havana, double accommodations for seven nights in Havana (single supplement add $700), breakfast daily plus two group dinners, airport transfers, and all visas and licenses. A $45 application fee will also be charged. Airfare to Miami and hotel accommodations in Miami are not included. Enrollment: 12 to 15 participants.
