Street Life in Havana
with Pedro Abascal
January 18 - January 25, 2012

This workshop has already begun or is a past workshop.

This program is organized and operated by Cuba Cultural Travel, in consultation with, and endorsed by, the Santa Fe Photographic Workshops.

The ballet of street life in Havana is the focus of this rich educational experience with respected Cuban documentary photographer Pedro Abascal. This educational exchange offers participants the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to engage in people-to-people experiences with the Cuban people and their amazing spirit and passion for living.

Life is lived on the streets in Havana. From dawn past midnight, the streets of Cuba’s capitol city are alive with the pulse of the island’s rich culture. Habaneros eat, play, converse, dance, argue, stroll, dream, love, sing, work, and indulge their passion for family life on the bustling streets of Cuba’s most vibrant city.

A tropical climate with little air conditioning, crowded living conditions, as well as the lack of television sets and video games has lead Cubans to live life outside. This public accessibility and Cubans’ openness makes Havana a paradise for those interested in street life.

The U.S. participants work closely in this program with Pedro who offers his vast knowledge of the city he was born in and still calls home after 50 years. He is joined by two English-speaking Cubans, acting as translators and guides, who facilitate these educational exchanges leading participants to the far corners of this beguiling city.

This program focuses on a different aspect of life in Havana each day. Each morning begins with a presentation by Pedro or another Cuban expert to discuss a different aspect of Cuban life. After this unique introduction, participants move to the streets with their cameras in small groups along with a guest Cuban photographer and with Pedro rotating between groups, to engage and interact with Cubans at work and at play; going to market and then gathering around the dinner table; enjoying a baseball game or going to community dance; celebrating a quinceñera or going to morning mass. This revealing week offers the opportunity to meet and interact with the Cuban people.
