Intensive: Adobe Photoshop for Black and White
May 26 - May 28, 2012

This workshop has already begun or is a past workshop.

With the development of fiber-based (baryta) photographic papers, multi-black ink sets and continued improvements in printers, the digital print is now every bit the equal of prints produced in the traditional darkroom. There is, however, an inherent beauty to traditional materials—a beauty we can examine, understand and replicate digitally.

In this two-and-a-half-day intensive workshop we examine the look of traditional materials, learn how to replicate this look digitally and then go beyond that point to make prints that have a beauty all their own. We delve into spectral sensitivity, and examine sensitometry and the curves first developed by Hurter and Driffield in 1890 and how they affected the look of traditional materials. Gordon covers Bridge and Camera Raw, and unlocks the power of Curves, Photoshop’s most powerful but least understood interpretive tool. We combine Curves with the Shadow Highlight tool to give deep but detailed shadows and highlights. We don’t stop with these interpretive tools, but go on to cover digital noise, perspective correction, edge burning, scanning and all the other tools and techniques needed to produce the fine black-and-white print.

Photography, especially its technologies, is constantly evolving, so join Gordon and delve into how to adopt and adapt to these changes in order to get the most out of your passion for photography and your equipment.
