The Contemporary Black-and-White Portrait
with Paul Elledge, Leasha Overturf
October 12 - October 15, 2011

This workshop has already begun or is a past workshop.

“Incredible workshop! The gold standard to any future workshop experience. I’ll just keep taking this one.” Duane Hall, former workshop participant

The ability to create dynamic portraits requires knowing how to avoid clichés and discovering new ways of seeing that spring from the imagination. Designed for accomplished photographers who are ready for the challenge of overcoming the limited nature of traditional portraiture, the focus of this workshop is creating your own style of portraiture through nontraditional uses of lighting and environment. We discuss issues such as instinct, self-confidence, and trust in the creative process, as well as methods for collaborating with clients and subjects, handling difficult personalities, and working effectively under pressure.

Through lectures, critiques, demonstrations, assignments, portfolio reviews, and study of their own work, Paul and Leasha inspire the class to forgo traditional rules to define a more contemporary approach to making portraits. We also discuss all aspects of organization, production, and the business of photography, including the specifics of career management and self-promotion.

The aesthetic and emotional concerns of contemporary portrait making are at the core of all discussions and daily assignments in the studio and on location in the Santa Fe area. This is a workshop about possibilities, control, and style.
