How does one capture the soul of a person in a photographic portrait? That is the central question of these four days with Greg, in which he shares his vision and his process from both the intuitive and technical perspective. Greg emphasizes the importance of the fine art of communicating with one’s subject—a critical component of attaining a connected portrait that captures the essence of an individual. Greg demonstrates and discusses the most effective use of lenses and camera angles. We focus on taking advantage of the available natural light to enhance a portrait and learn to use appropriate natural light modifiers within a variety of situations and personalities. Working with models under Greg’s guidance in some of Santa Fe’s most extraordinary locations, participants have daily opportunities to practice their newly acquired skills. Every portrait presents a picture of the infinite range of human nature and each picture is also a testament to an individual character. And among the many things you learn in your time with Greg is his belief that a photograph is most successful when it doesn’t answer all the questions, but leaves something to be discovered.
