Light and Meaning in Black-and-White Photography
with Jesse Kalisher
June 26 - July 2, 2011

This workshop has already begun or is a past workshop.

Throughout photographic history the interpretation of the world in black-and-white imagery has inspired, intrigued, and fascinated almost every photographer. The recent transition from film to digital technologies has not dampened interest in the timeless elegance of black-and-white photography. To the contrary, it has actually opened new avenues to explore.

Jesse Kalisher leads you on a journey to rediscover the world and the stories around you in black and white, and develop your own “large vision of life.” We explore the boundaries of black--and-white images—learning how to make them work to tell the stories you want to tell. This workshop is part technique and part artistry, as we learn to actively listen to our environment, and then interpret it and frame it in black and white.

We start the week by reviewing your ten best images, then build upon them throughout the week with our day-to-day assignments. We critique these assignments on a daily basis, as we hone and enhance our skills as compelling storytellers. To support our learning, Jesse presents his best work to illustrate key points about how to improve your skills as a photographer, and how to maximize your results in black and white.

Come ready to set aside your questions about Photoshop and printing—this is a workshop for people who want to spend a lot of time with their camera—and have a lot of fun doing it.
