For photographers who have longed dreamed of publishing a book of their own work, this workshop offers detailed insight into the ins and outs of the book publishing process. Beginning with the question, “What makes a great photography book?” we examine a variety of classic and contemporary examples in order to gain a deeper understanding of editing and sequencing a body of work. Topics include an overview of the publishing industry, issues of book design and typography, planning for production, and the marketing of a finished title. Print-on-demand and self-published books are discussed, with many examples shown throughout the week. The schedule includes demonstrations, guest speakers, and field trips to local publishers, photographers, and booksellers. Whether completed or still in progress, participants should bring a portfolio of their own photographic work that they wish to see assembled in book form. Seminar-style discussions of each participant’s work address conceptualizing, editing, sequencing, and possible book formats. Each participant has a private consultation with Darius and Mary Virginia and leaves with a checklist of priorities for publishing their own photography book. Darius and Mary Virginia are co-authors of Publish Your Photography Book; the web site for their book is www.publishyourphotographybook.com. INSTRUCTOR(S)
