Ireland:St. Patrick's Day in Western Ireland
with John Weiss
March 15 - March 25, 2011

This workshop has already begun or is a past workshop.

John's 10th photo tour to Ireland is his first to photograph during the St. Patrick's Day festivities. On March 17 we find ourselves in the picturesque village of Westport, County Mayo, right in the middle of the annual parade. And it’s not the luck of the Irish that everywhere we look everyone is dressed to be photographed. After this full day of photography we spend the evening enjoying lively traditional Irish music sessions in some of Westport's many welcoming pubs.

But St. Patrick’s Day is just one aspect of this tour. For 10 magical days we are immersed in the rich heritage of Irish folklore, literature, history, and music, for Western Ireland is a land of remarkable light, rugged natural beauty, and warm people eager to share their rich traditions.

We travel south to Connemara and north to Achill Island, photographing tiny villages, hidden beaches, ancient abbeys, and Druid woods. Days are spent photographing in two or three locations—unique places you could never find on your own. One of the special aspects of our tour is what we call “unscheduled stops.” A neighbor may invite us to a party, or a potter may show us around her studio. We may attend the Ballinrobe horse races, a cattle auction, a sheep-shearing contest, or an outdoor farmer’s market. Through theses adventures we discover a land and culture by living it, not just visiting it.

After a week based in Westport, we spend a day and night in vibrant Galway. With its university and Eyre Square, a bustling pedestrian-only thoroughfare, full of street performers, cafes, and stores with handcrafted items, Galway is a city with its own special Irish energy. We spend our last day and night in the charming riverside town of Ennis. This delightful village, with its cobblestone streets, has a multitude of brightly colored storefronts and fascinating architecture. Plenty of time to photograph in both Galway and Ennis is granted.

This tour features two extensive group critiques, as well as individual meetings with John.
