Lighting: Big, Small, and Natural
February 20 - February 26, 2011

This workshop has already begun or is a past workshop.

Lighting is the key to defining the mood, texture, and concept of any photograph. It is the essential tool for any photographer who wants to create images that contain greater depth and meaning. This dynamic workshop covers three types of lighting: studio strobes with umbrellas, soft boxes and grid spots; portable flash with modifiers, used off-camera and by remote; and natural light with reflectors and diffusers.

We start in the studio with power packs and monolights, covering the standard grip equipment, lighting setups, metering techniques, and control of exposure and color. Next, we work with portable flash devices, gaining a solid understanding of how they work, and how to use them in locations that have no access to AC power. We “diffuse” and “bounce,” and get the portables off our cameras, so we can avoid making images that have that “flash” look. When we move outdoors to photograph, our refined sense of the direction, quality, and depth of light makes it easier for us to locate and work with natural light’s innate beauty. Finally, we combine strobes with ambient light to balance both exposure and color, providing us with a variety of exciting, creative options.

This is a technical but fun workshop, with demos galore and photographing, photographing, photographing!
