Flash and Lighting: Joy Beyond the Basics of Digital Photography
with Rick Allred
December 6 - December 10, 2010

This workshop has already begun or is a past workshop.

Now that you have learned the basics of your camera, it is time to tackle available and ambient light and your flash equipment—sometimes called speedlights, off-camera flashes, or small strobes. Understanding and exploring lighting can give you consistent control over the “feeling” of your images. As with taking the camera off auto-mode, managing the balance between available light and flash makes more sense when we as photographers take control. At first encounter, speedlights, with all their bells and whistles, can seem like technical monsters. As we explore our flashes on manual mode, the control of light begins to make sense and, at the same time, stimulates our imagination.

Our focus is on color, quality, and direction of light. We use available light and flash to enhance what we see and what we want to capture with our cameras. In addition, we use these tools to express ourselves creatively.

The atmosphere in this workshop is one of exploration, practice, and play. So bring your cameras, speedlights, thirst for knowledge, and your own creative vision. Daily assignments and two evening shoots in Santa Fe are a part of our planned activities.
