This four-day advanced workshop focuses on how we perceive color, and the way light affects that perception. Through lectures, slide shows, shooting assignments, and critiques, Stephen shares his insight and influences. We develop an enhanced sensitivity, not just to perceptions of color, but to design and composition as well. Daily assignments exploring the unique color relationships within the New Mexico landscape put classroom discoveries into practice. Discussions include painting theory, the science of visual perception, and the sources and inspiration of personal creativity. Stephen leads group critiques, and spends time with each participant to concentrate on their individual work. While color is our primary topic, we also examine our choice of subject, the content and narrative of our photographs, and our point of view. In addition to focusing on the personal aspects of creativity, Stephen shares how he maintains an individual approach when operating within the commercial sector. The discoveries we make in the classroom are put to the test in practice. Our assignments challenge and enhance our visual awareness of color, inspired by the unique tonal relationships that abound in the landscape around Santa Fe. Assignments also include a day working with a model on location in the unique environment known as “the City Different.” INSTRUCTOR(S)
