Iceland: The Photo Hot Spot
with Allen Birnbach
August 10 - August 15, 2014

This workshop has already begun or is a past workshop.

Iceland has become one of the hottest destinations on the planet, and with good reason. With all but one of the world's ecosystems, there are breathtaking landscapes at every turn. The largest waterfall in Europe is in Iceland, as is the largest glacier. There are awe-inspiring lunar-like plains, dramatic bubbling mud pots, steaming geothermal pools, and moss-covered volcanic rock fields that extend as far as the eye can see.

And then there are the people. Warm, generous, and authentic in nature, they are wonderful subjects for portraits and photojournalistic images in their farming and fishing villages, as well as out in the country where we experience the unique Icelandic horses.

The workshop is led by Allen Birnbach, who has traveled to Iceland on multiple trips and has formed lasting relationships with people there. And our guide is a well-known Icelandic photographer in his own right, able to lead us to places tourists cannot find on their own and to adjust the schedule based on local weather conditions. The opportunities for great images increase exponentially with that kind of local insight.

Our trip begins in Reykjavik with a Sunday evening portfolio review, and the opportunity to talk about techniques and post processing. Monday travel to the Reykennes Peninsula to shoot geothermal pools, stunning mountain landscapes and dramatic coastlines. Tuesday we head east, visiting Gullfoss—one of the largest waterfall in Europe—and Thingvellir, where the Atlantic and European tectonic plates collide in wondrous formations. Over the next few days, we continue east to Jokulsarlon, where we ride in boats among cobalt blue icebergs calving off a glacier and visit some of the farming and fishing villages to experience the lives of the people who populate the island. Each evening, we edit and critique our work and refine our post-processing techniques.

Friday night we return to Reykjavik for a closing dinner and celebration.

Includes 6 nights lodging (single occupancy; discount available for couples or friends traveling together), all in-country transportation, and all meals. Airfare to our starting point in Reykjavik not included.
