Being Personal
with Phil Toledano
July 27 - August 1, 2014

This workshop has already begun or is a past workshop.

Personal projects are essential to a photographer’s creative life. They inspire us and spark our passion while teaching us to feel more deeply and see the world more clearly. When our personal projects turn inward and reflect personal stories, they take on added importance and significance. And when we share our lives and our most intimate moments, we elevate our photography to a new level.

The problem with many of our personal projects, however, is that they aren't always very personal. They often miss the mark of being poignant, memorable, and insightful. How, then, do we speak from the heart, unobstructed by restraint? How do we express our feelings with visual clarity and beauty? How do we share our life in a way that reflects all its complexities? These questions form the core of the week’s focus, and Phil’s role is not to give answers but to offer direction.

Daily lectures and discussions lead to group and individual assignments, with Santa Fe serving as a backdrop for personal image making. Critiques of these images help to open up new avenues for taking a more personal approach to our photography. When our work reflects our emotions and experiences, the rewards are not just ours but also our audience's.
