The Fundamental Art of Studio and Location Lighting
with Michael Karsh
July 20 - July 25, 2014

This workshop has already begun or is a past workshop.

Beautiful lighting is a key element in creating a memorable image. Whether we are in the studio or out on location, artificial lighting—and the ability to create light when it may not be there—is one of the most important tools we have available to us as photographers.

Over five days, Michael guides you step by step through the process of creating a powerful, effectively lit image, starting with one light in studio and then progressing to multi-light set-ups on location. Participants are given a chance to work with models in both venues, and while there is an emphasis on portraiture, Michael also covers on the art of lighting for products.

A wide array of equipment is used throughout to help you get comfortable with different lighting tools, and we spend as much hands-on time as possible interacting with them. Various lighting scenarios are demonstrated, from a pitch black room requiring complete artificial lighting to an already naturally lit scene that could benefit from an extra touch of light.

Michael facilitates daily group critiques, as well as discusses the merits of strobe lighting and the large role it plays in editorial and commercial photography. You gather all the knowledge and understanding necessary to employ a range of lighting strategies in your photography, as you open yourself to new creative possibilities.
