Photographing Dance
with Allen Birnbach
July 13 - July 18, 2014

This workshop has already begun or is a past workshop.

“Allen is very talented and skilled at instructing–a great combination. His style is patient but persistent. He works to provide subtle but firm guidance, excellent discussion, and he made an effort to spend individual time with us in the field.” Joe Diab, past Allen Birnbach workshop participant

The medium of dance offers a wealth of visual opportunity to photographers. Line, texture, form, balance, power, symmetry, and gesture—these are the building blocks of the art form. Under Allen's guidance, participants learn how to observe the power and beauty of dance in a critical way and employ that knowledge to capture the peak of a dancer’s movement or gesture. Lighting is one of the primary tools we use to create depth, accentuate musculature, express emotion, and freeze or blur movement.

We begin in the studio, exploring ways to make dynamic images using artificial light. We also look at static images, aerials, and planned movements that combine motion blur with tack-sharp elements within the frame. Then we take that knowledge on location, where we use available light to emulate a studio set-up or portable lighting to create dramatic effects.

Allen provides feedback through group critiques and on a one-on-one basis. As you discover which moments to capture, when to photograph them, and how best to light a dancer to serve your artistic goals, you gain a more nuanced perspective on dance—and the confidence to photograph it in a compelling and visually stimulating way.
