Jump-start your creative energy and add to your artistic toolbox as you investigate and experiment with an extensive menu of alternative photographic process techniques. Using The Book of Alternative Photographic Processes, 2nd Edition (Christopher James) as a guide, Michael encourages participants to find inspiration in new directions, new options, and new energy for their unique vision and artistic development.

Among the processes we work with are cyanotype, cyanotype on fabrics, salted paper process, kallitype, argyrotype, albumen, platinum and palladium, ziatype, and gum bichromate, as well as multi-process combinations, toning options, and black-and-white gelatin silver printing. We also explore large-format pinhole photography, digital negative separations for contact printing, and hand-applied emulsions on alternative surfaces.

You have access to a complete digital negative production set-up for producing contact negatives. While most printing is done in the sun, UV exposure units are available for printing on the rare cloudy or rainy day. Daily critiques, individual one-on-one meetings, and group discussions are a large part of the creative process, so make sure to bring an open mind, a sense of humor, and the willingness to expand your artistic vision.
