Creative Macro Photography
March 24 - March 28, 2014

This workshop has already begun or is a past workshop.

Charles had great new ideas for indoor macro! Margaret Miller, past participant, Macro Photography

How can you capture beauty in ordinary objects and make unique, artistic images that reflect your creative vision without a lot of fancy equipment, lighting, or technical proficiency? Charles demonstrates close-up, also called macro, photography using a wide variety of techniques in a controlled environment—both indoors and outdoors on a nearby patio.

With his expert guidance, you learn how to make compelling close-ups using the props and tools of a veritable creative arsenal: iridescent glass, clear textured glass, colorful backgrounds, Mylar, fresh-cut flowers, potted plants, shells, light boxes, glass objects, feathers, glycerin, black lights, multi-colored LED flashlights, color reflectors, diffusers, and more.

Topics covered include use of macro equipment (including specialized close-up accessories), shooting water droplets and reflections, creative lighting techniques, how to achieve striking compositions, soft-focus macro, telephoto and wide-angle macro, and cross-polarization.

Join Charles for entertaining lectures, challenging assignments, supportive image evaluations, and lots of hands-on photographing opportunities. Learn to go beyond documentary-subject rendition and create more abstract, expressive macro images.

To expand your workshop experience and encourage you to see in a whole new way, our friends at Lensbaby are sending an array of creative lenses for you to borrow. Attach a Lensbaby lens to your camera, add a macro filter, and get super-close eye-popping detail surrounded by beautiful Lensbaby blur. Add a Lensbaby Creative Aperture disk to your lens and and watch your bokeh take on shapes or textures. The creative possibilities are endless and Charles, who has been photographing with Lensbaby lenses for years, guides you through the process.
