Basics of Photographic Lighting
March 10 - March 14, 2014

This workshop has already begun or is a past workshop.

Alan and the staff were amazing! The locations we got to go to were fantastic! Brooke Hazel, past Alan Thornton workshop participant

Would you like to take more control over the messages conveyed by the quality of light in your portraits? We all know there are times that the weather or location simply can’t provide us with the best light for photographing, but by using your own lights you can have that control and creative expression right at your fingertips.

Over four days we work with the foundations of light in a fun and engaging environment, covering the basics of portrait lighting and exploring the various lighting modifiers to craft its personality. Alan demystifies technical components such as studio strobes lights, transmitters, camera settings, lens choice, and even light meters, to help you easily create the light that results in stunning imagery.

We point those lights at some interesting subjects, thanks to The Workshops Operations team, who bring in talented and unique people to sit as our models. Though our home base is The Workshops 3000-foot fully stocked studio space, we also spend a day out at one of Santa Fe’s more distinctive and dramatic locations.

Mastering the specifics of lighting might seem intimidating at first, but Alan keeps it simple. Under his expert guidance, you establish the confidence and skill to bring a new creative edge to your portraits.
