Picturing Cuba: Havana and the Countryside
with Eddie Soloway
February 4 - February 12, 2014

This workshop has already begun or is a past workshop.

The trip was very well planned and I loved being split up into small groups with our own guide. Penny Fogel, past Cuba Program participant

Cuba is one of the most enchanting and captivating countries in the world: a pulsating, multifaceted blend of history, music, dance, gracious people, and vibrant island culture. Picturing Cuba: Havana and the Countryside offers you a unique opportunity to engage with the Cuban people and discover the allure that is Cuba through your lens. Join photographer and seasoned Cuba traveler Eddie Soloway for this memorable journey to the Pearl of the Antilles.

Picturing Cuba provides with you with the perfect tandem—experiencing the bustling, urban life of Havana as well as the verdant, rural countryside, frozen in time just beyond the city limits. Explore the eclectic and polychromatic streets of Havana, primarily in the historical center of Old Havana and the more modern tree-lined neighborhoods of Vedado. Havana is a city of dreams, an idyllic paradise where economic and political conflicts mix with mojitos and tobacco.

Beyond Old Havana we discover an even slower lifestyle, the Cuban countryside—a world that seems unchanged for the past fifty years. Where the Cuban farmer, or campesino, sits on an old wooden chair, milking his cow and tending to his animals. Always friendly, the Cuban campesino knows how to receive a guest. Excursions focus on rural family life and include trips to community organic farms and livestock ranches, recreational seaside villages, and visits with rural artisans who create their work away from big-city influences.

Our 8-day, U.S. government-approved educational exchange program offers each participant unparalleled access to cultural, artistic and historical centers in Havana and various excursions to the surrounding countryside. English-speaking Cuban photographers who live in Havana act as our local hosts and translators. In alliance with Cuba's premier photographic organization, Fototeca de Cuba, and its director Nelson Ramírez, our unique program allows U.S. participants to learn about Cuba's long and colorful history and engage directly with Cubans from all walks of life.

Join Eddie and our experienced staff in Cuba for an organized educational exchange through the largest island of the Caribbean. The music, dance, architectural marvels, local produce markets, the tranquil country life and, most of all, the spirited Cuban people are the focus of Picturing Cuba: Havana and the Countryside, enabling you to better understand this intriguing island.

True to the requirements of the people-to-people license with U.S. Treasury Department, Portrait of Cuba focuses on exchanges with the Cuban people and recording their amazing lives with our cameras. There will not be structured photo instruction or group critiques.
