How can we use portrait photography to reflect a person's soul? Greg Gorman addresses this central question over the course of a week spent immersed in the history and culture of sun-drenched San Miguel de Allende. With Greg sharing his vision and his process from both the technical and intuitive perspectives, we explore the fine art of communicating with our subjects—one of the most crucial elements in creating a connected portrait that captures a person's essence.

Greg shows participants how to take advantage of San Miguel's abundant natural light and how to enhance a portrait by working with bounce, indirect light, and open sun, while using a range of light modifiers that include silks, reflectors, and blacks. He discusses and demonstrates the most effective use of lenses, camera angles, and appropriate lighting for a variety of situations and personalities.

Daily photographic assignments take advantage of San Miguel’s most beautiful locations including the colorful and sensuous walls of this 400-year-old colonial city, lush courtyards hidden behind hand-carved doors, the ruins of long abandoned silver mines, and spectacular gardens. Working under Greg’s guidance, participants are given opportunities to practice their newly acquired skills—and are given new reference points for creative inspiration.
