Portraiture is first and foremost about relationships. As photographers, our primary interest—our passion—is in capturing the full range of humanity in our subjects. To do this, we need to be skilled communicators and also be adept at combining light and shadow using a spectrum of light sources. Join Greg for four days as we delve into the subtleties of light and discover how to employ them to create strong portraits that illuminate the complexities of the human face. One technical key is knowing what to play up in the highlights—and what to play down in the shadows—to achieve the best possible image. We go to interior and exterior locations in and around Santa Fe to explore the effects created by light modifiers, such as reflectors, silks, and blacks, as well as portable strobes. Greg is committed to helping you take your individual communication skills to the next level, and we explore ways to engender the trust and confidence between photographer and subject that culminates in that much desired result: the connected portrait. We complete our time together knowing not only how to see and understand light, but also how to use effective communication to create portraits that evoke the spark of human connection in the photographer, the subject, and, ultimately, the viewer.
