The term “photography” stems from Greek roots, meaning literally "to write with light." Light is the language we use to convey our interpretations of specific places, but we rarely, if ever, have the opportunity to narrate our images while someone views them. The pictures have to speak for themselves. To succeed in this often-difficult task, location photographers must be comfortable with a wide range of tools to make their pictures tell a story. Join Joe for four accelerated days of exploring a broad spectrum of location lighting skills. We investigate how to simplify a potentially confusing location down to its workable basics. We delve into working within the limits of time constraints, being realistic about what is possible, and cutting through the clutter to define and execute an effective picture. We learn multiple options for using light appropriately—whether that involves five flashes, plus gels and drama, or one small flash that emphasizes the subject's importance. We might simply leave the available light as it is—or even employ a flash solution that mimics it. Throughout, we engage in lively and direct daily critiques. We also share a special meal where participants discuss business practices and survival issues facing photographers. You come away from Joe’s workshop able to confidently achieve reproducible results in all kinds of light, locales, and conditions. INSTRUCTOR(S)
