In the past 20 years teaching fine printmaking, George has noticed that students experience a creative gap in the production of prints, one that has nothing to do with technical or aesthetic concerns. The gap occurs in between the visualization of what a photograph can be at the moment of exposure and realizing this image through to the print stage. The difficulty comes when one deviates from what is normal in front of the camera and how to change that into something that has presence, mystery, mood, light, or any other quality you can imagine. A print that has a character other than the original representational image is what George calls, “The Interpreted Print.”

For four days, with George to guide you through the gap, you learn the skills necessary to accomplish this valued change from an ordinary representation to a magical sense of presence, mystery and light in color and black-and-white printing. Knowledge of Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop is essential to control the manipulations necessary to accomplish this interpretation. We also use the Ink Color Ex Pro 4 and Silver Ex Pro2 during the workshop. There is also an introduction to Corel Painter 12.

You are led through the entire process, from the camera stage where you visualize a final print through to an exploration of variations in mood, light, presence, color saturation, hue, and abstraction. The combination of your imagination plus an effective software workflow adds up to the creating of unforgettable imagery.
