Croatia is one of Southeastern Europe’s best-kept secrets: a lush region of coves, forested islands, and its crowning jewel, the walled city of Dubrovnik. The country offers an astounding array of natural and historic wonders, from the rich Renaissance architecture of Hvar to the grandeur that was Rome in Diocletian’s palace in Split. The variety of stunning places in Croatia creates a diverse canvas for photographers and we immerse ourselves in a unique culture that draws on both Roman and Venetian influences. Early in the journey, Brenda gives a presentation with ideas and tips for creating dynamic travel photographs while on this photo tour, including how to make images that evoke a sense of place, photographing people, capturing candid moments, working with available light, and how to simplify your pictures to give them more impact. We travel from the stone walls and ancient streets of Split and Dubrovnik, to the harbor town of Hvar, the sunniest of the isles, to the lakes and waterfalls of the Plitvice National Park, and finally ends in ‘The Second Tuscany,” the Istra Peninsula. The riches of these former empires unfold as we follow ancient trails through fertile countryside and along rocky coasts that lead to pristine beaches. We move in step with local life as we make our way through lively fishing villages, bustling markets, and charming hamlets preserved as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Infinite photo opportunities of beautiful city scenes and landscapes abound throughout our journey. Continue your excursion with the Slovenia Extension, October 11-16, and discover the “Secret of Slovenia” as you explore Predjama Castle, which clings to a cliff face, Bled, beautifully set amidst the Julian Alps, and the amazing underground caves of Postojna. Join tour leader Brenda Tharp for this incredible cultural and photographic opportunity, one designed to give maximum insight into all the beauty Croatia and Slovenia hold. The emphasis of the trip is on photography, yet it is one that non-photographic travelers can enjoy just as well. The pace will provide ample opportunity to wander, and explore these amazing countries.
