Tanzania Photo Experience
with Eddie Soloway
May 12 - May 23, 2013

This workshop has already begun or is a past workshop.

A year and a half ago, during a day inside the UNESCO World Heritage Ngorongoro Crater, we came across a meadow that seemed right out of a Camille Pissarro painting. Instead of pedestrians walking a Parisian boulevard, at least fifty pairs of African crowned cranes were taking a dignified stroll around the grass. Surreal turned to bizarre when a hyena charged an ostrich, sending the cranes into flight. It was moment that propelled other moments. There were cheetahs in the shade, which sent the water buffaloes on the move. With the background sounds of wildebeests grunting and monkeys fighting amongst themselves, we watched the rhythmic gate of giraffes necks advancing through the acacias. That was also the day that the lions held us captive by seeking shade under our vehicles, comically preventing us from driving.

Roll the visual dice in Tanzania, and you are never let down. This 12-day experience includes extended visits to the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, and Ndarakwai Ranch. With only three people to a safari vehicle—and commitments to go slow, get up early and stay out late—we focus on quality time for making photographs. Our Ndarakwai base at the beginning and end of the adventure includes visits to the local rural school, a Maasai village on the Ranch, and an up-close encounter with orphaned elephants.

Eddie Soloway's photographic insights come together with the decades of first-hand experience that our guide Peter Jones brings to Tanzania. As a young man Peter worked with the Leakey's on early digs, and he now runs Ndarakwai and guides professional photographers and film crews into the wilds of Africa.

Our Tanzania expedition is open to all photographers, spouses, friends and artists with an adventurous spirit willing to embrace the photographic focus of the experience.
