America's Galapagos: Photographing Channel Islands National Park
May 2 - May 5, 2013

This workshop has already begun or is a past workshop.

Channel Islands National Park extends across five unique islands that rest off the Southern California coastline. Despite being only 20 nautical miles from the coast of Los Angeles, the islands are an isolated oasis of an abundance of biodiversity.

The workshop kicks off from conservation photographer Ian Shive's offices at Tandem Stills + Motion in Culver City, California, where we spend the day in a state-of-the-art photography environment, learning about the islands and preparing for the photo expedition. That evening we migrate to Los Angeles' leading nature photography gallery, The G2 Gallery in Venice Beach, California, where we enjoy a private reception with wine and snacks and a viewing of Ian's Channel Islands work. The next morning we depart from Ventura Harbor to begin three days of fieldwork photographing on the islands.

In order to fully experience the unique beauty of the Channel Islands we camp inside the park. Comfortably situated in the shade, with running water and toilets, our base camp is in the middle of the park and within walking distance to dozens of great photographic opportunities. A private chef prepares all our meals.

From colonies of sea lions to nesting birds, the Channel Islands National Park offers a home to thousands of species, some of which can be found nowhere else on Earth. Through a combination of lectures and in-field instruction, Ian assists you in mastering composition, light, exposure control, and depth of field. You learn to anticipate the changing light and effectively translate that knowledge into a beautiful photograph that captures the magic of this special place. Ian guides your work through group experiences and one-on-one critiques, examining the digital workflow and modern techniques of contemporary photography. You depart the Channel Islands having become more confident in your photography skills while learning about an environment whose independent evolution has made it one of a kind.

Includes tuition, breakfast and lunch at Tandem headquarters, roundtrip boat fare, campground fee, private chef and all meals while on the islands, and a donation to the Channel Islands Park Foundation. Airfare to/from Los Angles and lodging in Los Angeles are not included. Click here for schedule details and gear list.
