» Norman Mauskopf
Featured in B&W Magazine
Veteran Workshops instructor Norman Mauskopf is currently featured
in the Spotlight section of B&W Magazine. The article
provides a peek into Norman's past and his future, including a
mention of his latest book, Descendants, an examination
of the Hispanic communities of northern New Mexico. As stated in
the article, "To describe the work of Norman Mauskopf simply
as documentation is to understate the depth of insight and understanding
he brings to his photo projects." Norman is scheduled to teach
his Visual
Storytelling workshop, March 15-21.
» New Staff Arrives
for Winter/Spring Season
The seasonal staff for our winter season arrived on Monday
to a blanket of snow. What a welcome! The Workshops is pleased
to have back Karen Lenz, Lauren Devon, and Alyssa Bowers. Also
joining the crew are Jenny Trest, Alex Stepanov, Elliott Hauser,
and Daniel Long.
The Workshops would also like to announce the addition of Chelsea Freeman to
the staff as Store Assistant. Chelsea worked seasonally for us in the past.

Mentorships
Last month, the Santa Fe Photographic Workshops
began offering the unique opportunity of working with a mentor
to expand your photographic knowledge and skills, and to refine
your photographic personality. A number of you have already begun
working with a mentor—an individual who is there to guide
and support your dreams and aspirations as a photographer.
The Photography Mentorships program offers three options.
In the first, you build a customized, long-distance, year-long
mentor relationship with one of 12 veteran photography workshop
instructors. This program includes 17 sessions with your mentor. The
second option is a six-month mentorship that includes eight
mentor sessions. The third option allows for single sessions
of 60 minutes each, communicating with a mentor by phone
and online.

Featured this month is mentor Elizabeth
Opalenik. As a mentor,
Elizabeth's intent is to help students find excitement in their
images and rekindle the passion that started them down the
road of photography. A self-described cheerleader, she works
with students to set goals so that they can move forward with
the next step. She uses conversations, exercises, critiques,
and even personal visits, and encourages the adoption of a “what
if?” attitude that encourages photographers to view their
subjects from many directions.

The Heart and Soul of Tuscany: A Photographic
and Cultural Expedition with John Weiss
May 12-22 with Venice Extension May 22-27
Ah, Florence! The city where the Renaissance began. We will explore its
streets, piazzas, and great works of art and architecture. John will take you
to premier photographic locations to capture the Ponte Vecchio, the Uffizi Corridor,
Michelangelo’s David, and the Duomo. This tour includes a
special one-day excursion to Pisa, via train, to photograph the famous Piazza
–the leaning Tower of Pisa.
A short drive from Florence transports us into the beautiful Tuscan countryside.
The region has large areas of woodlands, interspersed with vineyards, and dotted
with medieval towns high on hills and ridges. The quality of light here has inspired
generations of artists. Among our destinations are Siena, San Gimignano, and
Panzano.
Venice provides an exotic blend of Gothic, Byzantine and Renaissance styles,
seen today as it did in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Everywhere there
is water, shaping and reflecting the life of the city. It is a photographer’s
paradise and we’ll spend in-depth time exploring the city with our cameras.

Easter Week in the Heartland of Mexico with Raul Touzon
April 6-13
Mexico is a photographer’s paradise during Easter week. This seven-day
digital workshop with Raul Touzon—now in its fifth year—takes full
advantage of the many extraordinary sights and delights of Holy Week in colonial
Mexico. With Raul’s guidance and unparalleled access, we photograph the
amazing Holy Week events in the beautiful colonial mountain towns of San Miguel
de Allende, Ixtla, and Queretaro.
Mornings are devoted to reviews and critiques of images made the previous day,
as well as lectures on digital camera settings, accurate metering and exposure,
composition rules, creative use of light: mixing different light sources, creative
flash techniques as well as editing, sequencing and story development.
