Creative Eye: Digital Photography and Digital Darkroom Essentials
© Seán Duggan
with Seán Duggan
April 27 - May 1, 2009
Join Seán Duggan for an inspiring week that combines digital photography
with presentation, artistic discovery, and the exploration of creative ways to
improve photographs in the digital darkroom. Participants learn and practice
enhancing the straight photographic image as well as using it as a point of departure
for personal images that are interpretive rather than literal. Both with our
cameras and with Adobe Photoshop, we search for the extraordinary in the ordinary.
Location assignments focus on essentials such as composition, understanding how
existing light affects the image, mastering the camera’s light meter, exposing
two or more shots to extend dynamic range, and other methods for technical and
creative control in the camera. In the digital lab, Seán shares his Photoshop
and Adobe Lightroom techniques for transformations that include getting the most
from Raw files, color and tonal manipulations, black-and-white conversions, toning,
color tinting, masking techniques, creative layering, using texture and digital “lighting,” and
making fine inkjet prints.
Publishing Your Own Photographic Book
with Susan Hayre Thelwell
May 18 - May 22, 2009
The digital age has provided photographers with many delights, conveniences,
and new opportunities. Among the latter, one of the most rewarding is the capability
of creating bookstore-quality coffee-table books at home, using our own computers.
Participants in this workshop learn to use Blurb technology to make their own
hardbound photography books. After choosing a theme that best presents our images,
we design our dust jackets, including front and back flaps. We learn how to lay
out and sequence our books page by page, knowing that creating a strong rhythm
of photographs is crucial to a successful project. We also learn how to add text,
edit, choose the most appropriate fonts, colors, size, italics, underlines, indentations,
spacing, bullets, etc., and explore an array of special effects.
Once our books are edited and complete, we press the “Order Book” button
and, voila!—about a week later, our books will be delivered to our door.
Moreover, family and friends can order these books directly from Blurb, and if
we wish, Blurb can list books for sale on their site.
Also coming up in May: A few spaces remain in the
popular workshop The
Black-and-White Master Print with George DeWolfe, May 4-8, 2009.
This workshop combines advanced
perceptual practice with simple tools. Create your own black-and-white masterpiece!

The Guelaguetza—Dance of the Gods
© Raul Touzon
with Raul Touzon
July 18 - July 25, 2009
Guelaguetza—a Zapotec word signifying "offering"—is the
term used for the annual ceremony and celebration by which the pre-Hispanic inhabitants
of Oaxaca thank the gods for sufficient rain and a bountiful harvest. This workshop
with Raul Touzon is based in Oaxaca City, a UNESCO world heritage site, famous
for the beauty and harmony of its architecture, the richness of its cultural
traditions, the wide variety of its foods, and its temperate climate, which is
spring-like throughout the year.
Daily excursions to nearby villages and markets provide ample
photographic opportunities. The week also includes lectures and
demonstrations of digital camera settings, accurate metering and exposure, the
rules of composition, and creative uses of light including flash. Other topics
explored are editing, sequencing, story development, and the key tools in Adobe
Photoshop, Bridge, and Adobe Lightroom for the development of an efficient digital
workflow. Joining Raul is award-winning Mexican photographer Marcela Taboada,
a long-term resident of Oaxaca, who adds her thorough knowledge of the local
culture and heritage.

Whales of Alaska
© Bob Smith
with Scott Frier and Bob Smith
July 20 - July 27, 2009
Spend six incredible days photographing humpback whales in Auk Bay and the
Inside Passage, off the coast of Juneau, Alaska. We observe them up close as
they feed in groups and perform the "bubble-net" feeding technique or
lunge feeding. We capture spectacular breaching displays, when the 45-foot-long
whales thrust themselves into the air in a tremendous explosion of water. In
addition to the whales, we can expect to encounter otters, seals, sea lions,
and a wide variety of marine birds. A 40-foot-long charter boat takes us to
a variety of sites around the rich waters near Juneau.
Both Bob and Scott accompany the group into the field each day
and are always available to answer questions and provide assistance.
In the evenings we return to our home base, the Goldbelt Hotel in Juneau. Classroom
sessions include reviews and critiques of the day's images, as well as discussions
on creativity and composition.

Ireland: Portraits of Western Ireland
with John Weiss
July 27 - August 6, 2009
Western Ireland is a land of remarkable light, rugged natural beauty, and warm
people eager to share their rich heritage of music, folklore, literature, and
history. From our home base in County Mayo, we travel south to Connemara and
north to Achill Island, photographing tiny villages, hidden beaches, ancient
abbeys, and Druid woods. Days are spent photographing in two or three locations—special
places you could never find on your own.
Workshop leader is John Weiss and our guide is the well-known photographer and
author, Ron Rosenstock. Ron has a long standing love affair with Ireland and
has guided tours to Ireland for the last 30 years. His affection for the land
and the people is contagious.
Accommodations are at Hillcrest House, a comfortable home, set in rolling green fields, with a view of Croagh Patrick. At our home base, which exclusively hosts photography groups, you will enjoy local culinary favorites for breakfast and dinner prepared by a resident cook. This charming setting provides both inspiration and respite.
